During the process of transitioning to University status, Mercyhurst University hired KMA Design to provide new design standards for interior and exterior signage at Erie, North East and Girard campuses. Each campus presented circumstantial challenges in determining proper wayfinding, adequate lighting and helpful sign placement.
The main campus in Erie is located on 75 acres of uphill and downhill terrain, required a wayfinding system structured to the flow of campus. The North East campus is located on 84-acres of land with most of the property hidden behind the main buildings, Miller Hall and St. Mary’s Chapel, at the entryway. The signage master plan required direction around the main thoroughfares to proper parking lots and building locations on both campuses. The Girard campus located in the heart of a commercial complex was extremely hard to locate due to lack of identification on the property. The new signage clearly delineates the campus site from surrounding commercial entities.
KMA Design developed a unified style and design guidelines for all signage implemented on the campuses ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal laws. The signage program featured gothic architectural elements to create an attractive, intuitive and timeless appearance. Signage included both interior and exterior applications incorporating the Mercyhurst brand to blend with the architectural design of the campus buildings, while providing clear wayfinding to generate a well- coordinated campus feeling on each campus and between campuses.
