Located in rural southwestern Pennsylvania, Waynesburg University solicited KMA to help brand the institution as they transitioned from a college to a university. As a part of the branding and marketing program, a new logo was implemented. The signage program was an integral part of the school’s new identity as a complete replacement program was developed. The signage system established the campus’ gateways from various vantage points, directed both vehicular and pedestrian traffic and identified all major buildings and points of ingress.
The design of the sign program is reflective of the traditional colonial style of architecture that abounds. Buildings are clad in brick, limestone and are articulated with fluted columns and pediments. The sign program synthesized these elements into a sophisticated signage program that is integral with the feel and image of the campus. Half round faux limestone columns serve as end caps with brick bases and other points of articulation reminiscent of the look of the campus. Along with the signage, a banner program was put into place to graphically enhance the student’s experience along the common areas.
To extend the life and flexibility of the comprehensive signage program, graphic standards were created for future use assuring consistency in materials for maintenance and expansion.
