Stony Brook University Medical Center’s decision to undertake a major renovation led the center to hire KMA Design to design interior signage standards. The center’s major modernization project included a 256,000-square-foot area of new construction and renovation, a first for the 28-year-old facility.
KMA completed a comprehensive interior wayfinding system. A directory, department identification, elevator directories, room identification, and an outdoor overhead signs were all created to be contextual with the new architecture and interior design. The design theme complemented the hospital’s current décor while achieving the more modern look that the hospital was striving for with its renovation. Neutral tones were used in combination with wood, frosted acrylic and marble materials. Signage included bilingual text, presenting English first, followed by Spanish, creating a welcoming setting for the different cultures located in the Stony Brook, NY area.
