Due to their extensive resume of major league stadiums and arenas around the country, KMA Design was asked to develop the signage and wayfinding program for the new Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Arena. The 18,500 seat, multitiered facility required numerous types of signage to adequately circulate patrons and identify the various amenities found on each level. As the arena is used for multi- purpose events, the design had to be sympathetic to the architecture; as well as, the vernacular and the sport. The signage is a combination of flamed steel and cracked glass designed to emulate ice and denote the Pittsburgh area’s steel heritage. As an accent, there are high polished details on all signs that are reflective of hockey skate blades. In addition to the directional signage, KMA Design also implemented ADA compliant signs, retail and graphic enhancements for the arena.
